Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending the 2023 HIMSS Cybersecurity Forum in Boston, MA. It was a crucial gathering that shed light on the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures within the healthcare sector. As we navigate an increasingly digital landscape, where the threats to data and patient safety are evolving and multiplying, the significance of robust cybersecurity initiatives cannot be overstated.

I returned from the forum with a newfound appreciation for the pressing necessity to adequately fund and prioritize cybersecurity in healthcare organizations.

The Budget Conundrum

A startling revelation surfaced at the event — a typical cybersecurity budget in the healthcare industry hovers around a mere 3% of the overall IT budget. This figure is alarmingly insufficient, given the magnitude of the cyber threats faced. Experts propose that a more appropriate allocation would be 15% of the IT budget, highlighting the need to view cybersecurity as a dedicated line-item, distinct from the broader IT domain.
